Exams & Cleanings

Why are dental exams and cleanings essential?

Dental exams and cleanings are vital in ensuring that teeth stay healthy, addressing any issues while they're still small, and keeping the gums that support the teeth healthy.

What is included in a dental exam?

In our practice, a dental exam includes a series of x-rays, a visit from the dentist or one of the associates, and, if our hygienist is available, a cleaning as well.

What is a dentist looking for during a dental exam?

During a dental exam, we're looking for signs of active infection, which can come from the tooth or the tissue. We perform a head and neck exam to check for any signs of oral cancers or other alarming issues. We also look for active decay that could lead to infection and address it while it's small, possibly with fillings or more involved treatments like a root canal and crown. Additionally, we check for signs of grinding, which can severely damage the teeth, and offer solutions to minimize this damage. We also explore any cosmetic enhancements you might be interested in.

What types of recommendations might come after a dental exam?

After a dental exam, I strongly encourage addressing any active decay or infection. We discuss options to manage dental anxiety to ensure necessary treatments are not delayed. Education on how oral health affects overall health is also provided, emphasizing the importance of taking care of your oral health as part of taking care of your body.

How long does a full dental exam usually take?

A full dental exam at our practice takes about an hour and a half. This time allows for taking all necessary x-rays, performing a detailed tooth-by-tooth exam, checking the tissues, and conducting a gum exam to assess periodontal health. We also discuss your treatment plan, insurance coverage, and financing if needed.

Are dental exams painful?

Dental exams are not painful. The tools and instruments are used to ensure we accurately identify decay and other issues needing treatment. The process is similar to flossing or using a toothpick and should not cause pain.

Exam

A comprehensive dental exam will be performed by Dr. Turner your initial dental visit and at regular check-up exams which includes:

  • Examination of diagnostic x-rays (radiographs): Essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions.
  • Oral cancer screening: Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
  • Gum disease evaluation: Check the gums and bone around the teeth for any signs of periodontal disease.
  • Examination of tooth decay: All tooth surfaces will be checked for decay with special dental instruments.
  • Examination of existing restorations: Check current fillings, crowns, etc.

Professional dental cleanings include:

  • Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface.  Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
  • Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth.  It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva.  The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums.  This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease!
  • Teeth polishing: Remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling.
